The main depot, the biggest enclosed space of the area, with nothing but the iron pillars supporting the structure in it, was fascinating for me to walk into. Although the depot and arches are on ground level, because the platforms are on top of them, and the access doors are quite hidden to any main roads, I got the sense that I was underground while in there. Perhaps it was the untreated stone and concrete surrounding me that reminded me of caves and tunnels or maybe it was how all the sound from the city was blocked out and it was either silent or echoing when someone spoke.

To try and show the sense I got when walking around the empty contrete depot, I made this essence model. The main points of interest I wanted to recreate was the beautyof the big open spaces with high arches ceilings because I loved the arch shapes, and the echoing hum that the space makes.

I took a short recording of the the echos in the depot and draw out the sound waves onto acetate and layeres it onto a photo I took of the arches, to compare the curves. Then I attached a stretched piece of eleastic across the same width to create a physical noise to represent the echos from the depot and also to hopefully add to the visual of soundwaves creating arched curves.

Below is a successful photograph of the elestic vibrating to make visible curves. I am very happy I was able to capture the movement in a photo to show the tree layers of curves from the Arches, the recording and the sound waves.
